Portrait Painting

February 6, 2023 by jnkiffe

Lately, since having children I haven’t the room/time to dedicate to creative pursuits. But I have been able to embrace art in painting. I studied watercolor for a bit, before finding real joy in gouache and painting faces. I’m still studying, sometimes I seek to copy the traits of a person, sometimes not, but I enjoy the way the medium lets me pick it up and come back to it if I need to stop and attend to something with […]

Children’s Party Adventure

October 29, 2013 by jnkiffe

One day, I was struck with the inspiration to design an adventure for a child’s birthday party. Unable to ignore the idea pestering my mind, I decided to flesh it out.  It turned into an elaborate game, complete with script acted out by adults and many little games blended together into the story. When it is time for cake, the king (the birthday girl’s dad) calms everyone down and goes to retrieve it. But when he returns, he shares the […]

Floral Design

October 28, 2013 by jnkiffe

On occasion, my mother and I like to do floral projects for friends and family’s special occasions. Most recently, we did all of the flowers for my cousins wedding.  In the gallery, you can see a few samples of arrangements we did, but when the photographers photos come in, I’ll be sure to post them. Also, if you live in the Ventura county area, and you are interested in having us do flowers for your special event, email me.

Vintage Travel Guest Book

October 28, 2013 by jnkiffe

My cousin and her new husband love to travel. In fact, they had a destination wedding in Ireland (a country where they both share heritage). She asked me if I would help them find a guest book, something that reminded her of “old-world travel” type of design.  I ended up taking it a step furthur than she expected, and I created a full scrapbook for them. I took a used book called “One World”, took out all of the old pages and […]

Heroes VS Villains

October 24, 2013 by jnkiffe

This is a work in progress. In a few weeks I will get to play test it, and then hopefully I’ll have some photos of the game in action! I can’t wait. Basically, I asked all of my friends to come dressed as either a hero or a villain (and purposly asked the couples to split so the game could achieve somewhat balanced numbers). The game itself is based off of the game Cranium, where there are different categories of […]

Robot Wedding Graphics

October 24, 2013 by jnkiffe

My husband and I met in a robotics independent study course at school.  As such, our wedding was robot-themed.  This little robot bride and groom I created to put on all of the wedding stationary.

Origami Bird Quilt

October 24, 2013 by jnkiffe

This was a project I did for a friend’s baby shower.  While my husband and I were in Denmark, we saw these really neat mini-quilts that folded up like origami into swans. I thought it was a really neat idea, so when I got home I tried to recreate it.  I successfully made my own pattern, and have since drafted up two more original patterns for a fox and a dog.

Skelita’s Bedroom Design

October 24, 2013 by jnkiffe

I have to admit, when I found out about the Monster High dolls, I was a bit jealous they weren’t available when I was younger. I find something about the creepy-cool look of them very appealing. This craft project was also a fun chance to play with interior design, (on a much smaller, affordable scale – haha). For this project, I challenged myself to create a design inspired by the Skelita doll (whom herself is inspired from Dia de los […]

MASH for Android

October 24, 2013 by jnkiffe

This was a project I did on my own because I wanted to learn how to implement Android apps. This application is a version of the child’s fortune-telling game MASH, where the player inputs several options for different categories, like potential spouse, wedding location, dream car, etc, and the game chooses a random option from each category to tell the player his/her “future”. It also has a “love calculator” where the player can input their name and the name of […]

Ace Altro

October 23, 2013 by jnkiffe

Ace Altro was an independent research project I did in college with two other students. We wanted to develop an eduactional game that was fun, but also helped students learn how to construct and prove/disprove logical arguments. You can play the demo version of the game on the EGRIS website.

EW Logo

October 23, 2013 by jnkiffe

After designing the LTS Logo, the division head saw my work and asked me to design a logo for the entire EW division. Of course, I complied. The crow is a symbol for EW, so they wanted it incorporated, but I decided to go with a look and feel much like my LTS logo — more mature — than the older, cartoony logos most of the other groups use. I also had to make a black and white version so […]

LTS Logo

October 23, 2013 by jnkiffe

This was a project for my team at work. Our old logo consisted of a very cheesy cartoon crow, and my group wanted a much more…mature…feeling design. Something more intimidating. Something that said “We mean business”, and that they wouldn’t be ashamed to display. For fun, I threw this together, inspired by the asterisk symbol used on laser warning signs. Then I ended up getting roped into designing one for the whole EW Division.

Small Scale Interior Design Play

January 27, 2015 by jnkiffe

I am definitely confessing my guilty pleasure with this post.  I love the Monster High and Ever After High doll lines.  The level of detail and design work that goes into them… I just had to start a collection.  My husband thinks I’m crazy, but I don’t really care. Here is another shot at trying to design a room to fit one of the Monster High doll’s themes.  The doll was Abbey Bominable the “daughter of the abominable snowman”.  Her […]

Challenge – Reluctant I

October 29, 2013 by jnkiffe

In this challenege, I could only use the personal pronoun twice – yet still tell the story from the first person perspective. I knew that look.  Georgetta Jones stood amid the tinsel and twinkle lights.  She ran her fingers through perfectly tousled hair, gaze fixed on Henry Alcott under thick lashes.  His new wife had disappeared in a huff – probably off to the washroom to freshen up after their little spat – and the shark, smelling fresh blood, swam […]

Challenge – Imperative

October 29, 2013 by jnkiffe

This challenge was to write a fragment of a story made up entirely of imperative commands.  I chose the theme Tango.       Check your reflection in an outside window; make sure everything is perfect before you go in.  Guarantee no lock out of place, no lint on your lapel, tie’s straight, shoe’s polished, breath’s fresh.  Push the double doors open when you are satisfied.     Survey the atmosphere of the salon:  the lights, dim everywhere except over the dance […]

Challenge – the Royal “We”

October 29, 2013 by jnkiffe

This one was weird, and rather difficult to execute, as it just felt wrong – like I was breaking the rules.  I was supposed to write from the pov of a close knit couple, where you couldn’t tell which one of them was narrating the story, because they both were.  I was not allowed to refer to either one in first person singular, but I had to refer to both in first person plural.  This one involves a pair of […]
